About me

Background and Beliefs

Hello and thank you for visiting my website.  On a little bit more personal note, my name is Hsiu-Hui Chen (陳秀慧), it was given to me by my grandmother.  Hsiu means gentle and Hui means wise.  She wanted me to be empathic in heart and deliberative in mind.  That is the person I strive to be.

As a feminist psychologist, I strive for equality and social justice and supporting the marginalized ones by the system by using the power assigned to me as well as the privilege I own. I try to understand people's experiences through the interactions between them and the world. To empower each individual/group to explore their internal and external resources to the path of liberation from sufferings.

I believe social justice is not something that can be turned on while at work and left in my office when I leave; it is something rooted in me. In my personal life, the most frequent practice is observing and reflecting. The observation of societal phenomena, operation of different systems, and each social interaction help me to understand the nuances of oppression. The journey of becoming a social justice advocate is a humbling one. I still catch myself making mistakes. Each mistake is a reminder for more devotion in this path internally and externally. Since the nature of social justice is about people and relationships, only through these personal work, I can be a better agent of social justice.

I have a goal as a psychologist and as a human being. I want to contribute to the liberation of people who are oppressed by the system. This work can start from building our connections with ourselves and others.

Experiences and Specialties

I am a licensed psychologist in Pennsylvania and Delaware. I have been practice therapy since 2008. I centered my client populations within Asian community, Black community, BIPOC communities, immigrant community, and LGBTQ community.

In individual therapy, the focus of my work lands on relationship, trauma recovery, healing from oppression, loss and grief, identity development, and career development.

With consultation, I am trained and experienced  in providing consultation for organizations (schools, colleges, small business..) who value the work of racial and cultural justice in the system, this include one time workshops, presentation series, and facilitation of difficult dialogue. The topics range from providing culturally responsive workshops related to mental health and relationships to interracial conversation regarding racial oppression.

Supervision is one of my specialty areas. My value to supervision stems from my desire of paving the way forward in the field.  I started providing supervision since 2009.  I am also experienced in providing supervision for therapist who provide bilingual therapy.  We know that there are layers of complexity in bilingual therapy than simply translating the languages.  Based on my research and clinical experiences, I am always excited to engage in the discussion about the nuance of  bilingual therapy.
